The first settlers in the area came to Bridgman in the 1830s. Plentiful forests and water in the area led to the development of lumber companies. The village of Charlottesville was established there in 1860. Charlottesville and the nearby village of Laketon combined approximately 10 years later to form the village of Bridgman. Several plant nurseries were established in the village during the 1880s. Bridgman became a city in 1949. Parks and Recreation

 

Weko Beach is the largest park in Bridgman. It has picnic tables on the beach. The park also has play areas, boardwalks and a boat launch ramp. Swimming is allowed at the beach. Other park amenities include a playground and picnic areas. People can go hiking and cross-country skiing on the trails in Grand Mere State Park in Lincoln Charter Township. Hunting is permitted here. Visitors can swim and picnic at the beach.

There is a bicycle trail between Weko Beach and the beach at Warren Dunes State Park.
