Stevensville, MI Area Guide

Stevensville is a village in Berrien County, Michigan. The village lies within Lincoln Township. The population was approximately 1,200 at the 2000 census.

History

In 1870, Thomas Stevens laid a village plat and called it Stevensville. On April 3, 1872 the plat was legally recorded at the Berrien County Court House in Berrien Springs. Passing a resolution, the Senate of the State of Michigan proclaimed the Village of Stevensville a chartered village in March of 1893.

The strongest influence on Stevensville was the railroad company laying a rail line through the land. After much clearing of the land, the pioneers and early settlers in this area began to dream about a community settlement. Small stores providing basic supplies were made available in conjunction with the grist mills. As business-minded men saw the potential of a community budding, other stores and businesses began to sprout in a central area.

Barbott Farms and Greenhouse is always growing. This is a four generation farm composed of over 200 acres. In the spring there are over 170 varieties of hanging baskets and 200 varieties of perennials. In the fall the farm plants over 10,000 mums.

Bredeweg Acres offers acres of choose-and-cut and fresh pre-cut Christmas trees from the following varieties: Colorado Blue Spruce, Douglas & Fraser Fir and Scotch & White Pine. There is also a Gift Shop with many handcrafted items for sale. A Children's Petting Zoo is also open.
